Big fish: Story Time

Big fish: summer assignment

Activity#1: story time

From watching the movie, I learned that Jenny Hill is 10 years younger than Edward Bloom, and that she was also the witch, I also learned that the death of Edward was only made up by William. The scenes that really stood out for me was, with the snake and the mermaid, Will saw the stick as a snake and the mermaid as a woman, also at the funeral, Edward's friends were all " normal " but when he tells the stories, there seems to be something more to his friends and his life. I think that the moral lesson of the movie is that we should dream big, live an extraordinary life, be kind, and work hard for what you want, just like Edward did when he was gathering clues to find Sandra. The significance of the " big fish" is that, it's how Edward got the ring in the beginning, he caught the big fish, and in the end of the movie Edward took out a ring from his mouth and gives it to his wife, then he turned into a big fish. Understanding the storyline helps you get into character by, knowing how to react to a specific scene, and by being able to put yourself into a character's shoes.

  1. It was really interesting reading you post as I had not watched the movie version of the play! It's cool to hear the differences from the two. You did a great job at explaining the movie and it's moral lesson.

  2. I chose to watch the musical instead of the movie, but from the information you’ve provided, it sounds quite interesting; and I mean that in a positive way. I think its great that you wanted to share some of what you learned from the movie; though I admit, I was caught a little off guard upon reading some of the twists from the movie. Speaking of which, if Jenny was the with, then wouldn’t she have been older than Edward?

I really like what you interpreted as the significance of “Big Fish”; it makes sense and the ending seemed very sweet. Do you think a scene like that should have originally been in the novel and/or the musical?

  3. I like the way you had said how Edward's perception of all of his friends from his journeys are different from the reality. I believe he made them unique so they could be remembered and also since he was telling the stories to his son.I find you expressed it wonderfully.
